Excellence requires constant attention

Sometimes all that you need is right in front of you. But too often, it’s so easy to think how lucky other people are, or to believe that if only I did this or if only I did that, things would be better. Mostly, all that you really need is right in front of you. Recently, I’ve been going through this process of trying to understand and enhance my business. Trying to really dig in and see where I can create improvement, whether that improvement is internal, external, or a combination of all of the above. Obviously, we have all […]

Focus on the culture you create.

Firms that focus on culture, common values, and vision, win as a team. Families that are clear on their values; financial, faith, spiritual, marital and more, win as a family. Disconnection in any of these leads to failure, whether that means not meeting your goals, personally, professionally and financially. Or failure can show up in just how you feel day to day. Appreciation & Respect.

Appreciation and respect. Two words that are often overlooked, sometimes overused, and yet somehow not delivered enough. I had a friend of mine who was very close for a number of years. It was a very hard realization to make, but one that was critical in my development and ultimately in me ending that relationship. All relationships deserve appreciation and respect. All of them. Whether […]

Honest dialogue.

“Who would have ever thought a car ride would have turned into this incredible business opportunity?” he asked me. Conversations, when pointed, honest, and real, can lead to some incredible things. But too often, we are all focused on what people want to hear as opposed to things that people should hear, or the way things can be done and should be done versus the way they are being done. It’s okay in business and in life and with our friends and family to talk about various topics and have differing opinions. Those things can yield incredible results if allowed […]

Move Away Goals and Move Toward Goals.

A long-time friend and mentor said something to me the other day that really resonated. In life and in business, you must have two sets of goals: Move Away Goals and Move Toward Goals. In thinking about what these two goals meant, I really spent some time digging in to understand what they meant to me. Here are a few of my thoughts: Move Away Goals are what keep you moving away from your comfort zone. The problem is, if you get too far out, then you can burn out. Why? Because you’re not always going to achieve that goal in the […]
