You can’t wait for happiness.

“You can’t wait until life isn’t hard anymore before you decide to be happy.” I heard this quote fairly recently from a young woman who was terminal from a rare cancer. For some reason, it really hit me. So, why do we allow external events and difficult times to determine our happiness? Happiness should be – and is – a state of mind. We should always remember that, particularly during the most difficult of times. We cannot look to our spouses, our families, or even our dear friends to help us with that happiness. It must come from inside. If […]

Excellence requires constant attention

Sometimes all that you need is right in front of you. But too often, it’s so easy to think how lucky other people are, or to believe that if only I did this or if only I did that, things would be better. Mostly, all that you really need is right in front of you. Recently, I’ve been going through this process of trying to understand and enhance my business. Trying to really dig in and see where I can create improvement, whether that improvement is internal, external, or a combination of all of the above. Obviously, we have all […]

Lately

I’ve had a tremendous amount of anxiety lately. Watching my kids get older, seeing family get older, just watching the passage of time and feeling like I haven’t been a part of it, but more over, have been sitting on the sidelines watching it all happen. Not being an active participant in my own movie. How the heck do I have a 13-year-old daughter and an 11-year-old son? Wasn’t I just 25 yesterday?! I often ask myself, am I where I want to be in life? Am I where I should be? Are the choices that I’ve made the right […]

Appreciation & Respect.

Appreciation and respect. Two words that are often overlooked, sometimes overused, and yet somehow not delivered enough. I had a friend of mine who was very close for a number of years. We’ve done a number of things together: traveled, played golf, etc. While I very much appreciated and respected the things he had done, what I grew to realize is that those feelings were not mutual. It was a very hard realization to make, but one that was critical in my development and ultimately in me ending that relationship. All relationships deserve appreciation and respect. All of them. Whether […]

Thankful for all we’ve learned.

My grandfather Joe never really liked me. I won’t go into the thorny details of our relationship, but the simple truth remains. Without question, my grandfather Joe was very hard on me. And he most certainly never understood me or made any effort to thaw our relationship. And yet that relationship, like so many, I remain thankful for. Why? Because I learned so much from my grandfather – even if they were painful life lessons. Granted, he had no intention of bestowing these lessons upon me (or any other charitable act pointed in my general direction). Still, it’s due to […]
