What’s the meaning of life? That’s an easy one.
What’s the meaning of life?
That’s the question that’s echoed through the ages, stumping the greatest philosophers, scholars, and holy men alike through the millennia.
But, to me, the answer is easy.
The meaning of life is to find your gift.
That’s it.
Since we crossed that off the list of eternally unanswerable questions, let’ keep going.
When it comes to your life’s work, your task is to develop that gift.
And the purpose of life? That’s to share your gift.
Meaning, purpose, and life’s work, all relating to your gifts.
Now, the hard part: how can we achieve those lofty ambitions?
I truly believe it comes down to the more mundane and earthbound endeavor of goal setting. We all set goals (or should, anyway).
But how often do you check in on the progress of your goals? Only when you’re not keeping up with them? Only when you give them up?
How often (and how) do you re-evaluate where you are in life? In business? With your health, happiness, and relationships?
For instance, one of my goals is to not drink during the week, unless I’m entertaining.
Yesterday, I checked in with one of my friends who has a similar goal, which we both pledged this year. How was she doing with our shared goal?
“Excellent!” she responded. “Two weeks in a row, no drinking Sunday through Wednesday. I can’t believe how much better I’m sleeping, too. How about you?”
“I’m feeling great.” I was happy to report, “Working out more than ever. ‘Feeling strong and in shape. I want to be in the best shape of my life by my birthday!”
Once again, sharing my goals with someone – and holding each other accountable – is the MOST IMPORTANT aspect of achieving them. And we stay on track by checking in on each other, making sure we’re making progress.
I know, I know, it is ONLY mid-January. How off-track can we be? Why check in so soon?
When it comes to goals, I’ve found that if you think about them daily, check in monthly, and validate quarterly, an amazing thing happens – you actually achieve them.
And then, the fulfillment of goals ensures that you’re empowered and have clarity about your gifts.
Remember,
The meaning of life is to find your gift.
The work of life is to develop it.
The purpose in life is to share it.
What does the above mean to you?
I hope sharing this means something a little more to you, and the work we do is a little more special this year.
And, most of all, I wish you the joy of discovering and cherishing your gifts.
