“J.D., it’s not you – but we have decided to go a different direction,” he said.
“Jeremy, I just got off the phone with a client and friend of mine,” one of our One Wealth advisors told me. “They said they are going a different direction and not using us. What do you make of that?”
Then, another.
Man-o-man – this has been a week!
We’ve had clients and prospects choosing to go a different direction – things I have NOT experienced much in my 30+ years (or least that I remember).
Then, this morning I wake up to a different kind of message.
“Thanks so much for your time and optimism, J.D. We can’t thank you enough for what you and your team do for our family.”
I stopped and read it twice and smiled with the revelation.
Look, you cannot be all things to all people.
Everyone you connect with or touch needs to appreciate and respect the work that you do and who you are. If they don’t, there is no point. It doesn’t matter how much you do for them or what you say, they will never be happy or content.
It’s just not a good fit – and that’s perfectly ok.
I have been in financial services since 1995. I feel like I have seen it all, experienced so much. What else could there be?
But the fact is that none of that is true!
There will always be something new.
There will always be people that disappoint you or let you down.
The secret is to de-personalize. Move on. Always play offense. Realize that every day is another chance at being great and doing great for yourself, your clients, family, and friends.
It’s all about perspective and facing forward no matter what the day, week, month, or year throws at you.
After all, the decision is ours.
