Let’s talk about technology – and our use of it.
It’s such a fine line.
Recently, my wife and I have been having a lot of trouble with our son and his use of technology.
Like most boys, he is active, loves sports, and being outdoors.
But he LOVES video games too. Now, I feel we have done a decent job of regulating it.
However, we recently found out that he was using some of these games and tools at school. He had been told on five different occasions not to do so – but continued.
So much so, that detention followed, and more punishment is certain if this does not change.
So, we decided no more. He’ll get zero video games for the next month. Should this continue, the punishments will get worse.
Right now, we’re on a flight. Normally, the kids get their iPads and can use them for shows or video games. Well, not this time.
We must hold them accountable.
Why share this?
Technology is important and critical in this day and age, and will play an even more important role in the future.
However, technology without understanding its power and without limits or restrictions is very dangerous, not just for our kids, but for society.
Keeping ourselves grounded and aware – as well as accountable – is paramount to success with all of these tools as well as in life itself.
Look, I have no idea how things will turn out. Lord knows I use technology, love all that it can do, and how it can enrich our lives.
All that being said, I would much rather have my children and surround myself with people who are engaged, present, accountable, and accessible.
Technology is here. We know that.
But how and when we choose to use it is still our choice.
